About this calculator

This lean body mass calculator estimates lean body mass from height and weight using published predictive equations. It can be useful for nutrition planning and for understanding how much of body weight is estimated as non-fat mass.

Do not use this calculator alone for medication dosing, diagnostic decisions, or body-composition diagnosis. Direct methods such as DEXA can give different results.

Source-backed
Uses published Boer and Hume lean body mass equations based on height, weight, and sex. These are estimates and are not equivalent to DEXA or direct body-composition testing.

Limitations
Educational estimate only; not a diagnosis, prescription, or treatment plan.

Formula and method

Boer formula: male LBM = 0.407W + 0.267H − 19.2; female LBM = 0.252W + 0.473H − 48.3. Hume formula: male LBM = 0.32810W + 0.33929H − 29.5336; female LBM = 0.29569W + 0.41813H − 43.2933. W is kg and H is cm.

Limitations and when not to rely on this result

  • Educational estimate only; not a diagnosis, prescription, or treatment plan.
  • Result depends on accurate inputs and may not apply to complex medical situations.
  • Use clinician judgment, local guidance, and urgent care pathways when symptoms are severe.

Frequently asked questions

What is lean body mass? +

Lean body mass is an estimate of body weight excluding fat mass. It includes muscle, organs, bone, water, and other non-fat tissues.

Which formula should I use? +

Boer is commonly used and is the default here. Hume is included for comparison. Neither replaces measured body-composition testing.

Can this be used for medication dosing? +

Do not use this calculator alone for medication dosing. Clinical dosing should follow the drug-specific guideline and clinician judgment.

Why can formulas differ? +

Each equation was developed from a different population and statistical model, so results can differ for the same height and weight.

Is lean body mass the same as muscle mass? +

No. Lean body mass includes muscle but also bone, organs, body water, and other non-fat tissues.
