About this calculator

This calculator estimates daily infant formula intake from body weight using a common American Academy of Pediatrics rule of thumb. It also divides the estimate by the number of feeds per day.

Infants vary. Hunger and fullness cues, growth, wet diapers, medical history, prematurity, vomiting, and weight checks matter more than a single calculated number.

Source-backed
Uses the American Academy of Pediatrics formula-feeding rule of thumb: about 2.5 ounces of infant formula per pound of body weight per day, while emphasizing feeding cues and pediatrician guidance.
Review status
Activated — feeding planning estimate
Limitations
Educational estimate only; not a diagnosis, prescription, or treatment plan.

Formula and method

Estimated formula per day = 2.5 oz × infant weight in pounds. mL/day is calculated by multiplying ounces by 29.57. Average per-feed volume = daily amount ÷ feeds per day. A usual 32 oz/day upper guidance note is displayed when relevant.

Medical safety note: This page is for education only and should not replace professional medical advice. For emergencies, medication decisions, or severe symptoms, contact a qualified clinician or local emergency service.

Limitations and when not to rely on this result

  • Educational estimate only; not a diagnosis, prescription, or treatment plan.
  • Result depends on accurate inputs and may not apply to complex medical situations.
  • Use clinician judgment, local guidance, and urgent care pathways when symptoms are severe.

Frequently asked questions

How much formula does the AAP rule of thumb estimate? +

AAP parent guidance says many babies average about 2.5 ounces of formula per pound of body weight per day.

Is 32 ounces per day a hard maximum? +

AAP guidance says babies should usually drink no more than an average of about 32 ounces per day, but individual needs and pediatrician guidance can vary.

Does this work for breastfed babies? +

Not exactly. Breastfed babies often feed more frequently and intake is harder to measure. Use diaper counts, growth, and pediatric guidance.

When should I call the pediatrician? +

Call for poor feeding, fewer wet diapers, repeated vomiting, lethargy, fever in a young infant, poor weight gain, or if the baby consistently wants much more or less than expected.

Can premature babies use this estimate? +

Premature, low-birth-weight, or medically complex babies often need individualized feeding plans, so this calculator should not be used alone.
